Battery Park Update

Monday, May 12, 2008

The Battery Park Neighborhood Association is hosting a meeting this week and is requesting some information on the status of returning the park to regular activity now that the sewer line work has been completed.

J.R. Pope and the staff at Recreation and Parks are making progress to restore the park to the benefit of the community and notes the following improvements thus far:

Baseball and Football Fields
During a final walk-through with the contractor on April 18, it was discussed as to what still needed to be done with regards to the football field and to the southern end of the park.

DPW was contacted to mow the area and was scheduled to do so when the rains came the following weekend and they have been behind since. Crews came in this past weekend (enterprise fund) and mowed the entire area however with the rains on Friday and Sunday it will still require some time to dry the infield so that crews can work this into a usable practice facility for the remainder of the summer.

The contractor still needs to come in and repair the ruts in the football field and remove rocks and debris left from the construction. It is hoped that all of this can be done so the field can be used this fall.BatPark160

Battery Park - Main Section
Construction has begun to remove the asphalt from the five (5) tennis courts that were damaged due to Ernesto. These courts will then be repaved, color-coated and striped with new posts and nets.

The basketball court will be moved from its original location and placed where the two tennis courts were just South of Overbrook. These will also be color-coated and striped.

The restroom has been gutted and will be rebuilt bringing it up to current standards.

The old playground house has been removed.New playground equipment has been ordered and will be installed to replace the play cluster that was ruined during the flood.

The asphalt pad and benches adjacent to the playground will be replaced. This work is planned for a mid to late summer completion barring any severe weather or other unknown set backs.

Fences
The fences will remain as construction fences until the courts and other amenities are rebuilt. They will come down as the renovations are completed.

First Tee
The agreement to re-open First Tee Golf Course is in the signature stage and a  “soft” opening could occur this week. A larger, more formal grand re-opening will take place later in May or early June.
