Why has it taken City Council 15 months to appoint members to the City Charter Review Commission? I don't know the answer, but it further suggests that Council wants to revert back to the old form of government and make itself more powerful again. This is not what the citizens authorized in the 2003 referendum for a directly elected Mayor.
Council not only wants to relax the appointment requirements for the Commission that will review and recommend changes to the Charter, but also has stricken language calling for a public hearing on the changes!
They will also appoint all the members themselves and supply their staff to assist the Commission. They have even removed a requirement that places at least two City residents on the Commission.
Does that sound like progress or a return to the old way of doing business?
