Is Your Property in a Floodplain?

Tuesday, June 24, 2008

The new Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Flood Map for the City of Richmond will be the subject of a public meeting Tuesday, July 1, from 7 – 9 PM in Council Chambers at City Hall.

FEMA has redrawn all of the floodplains within the city of Richmond and City officials will be on hand to answer questions and assist citizens in the appeals process.

FEMA placed two public notices in the newspaper in April as required, and the new designation would affect approximately 2681 properties. The City sent a letter to each of the affected property owners on June 17 to explain the possible impacts to their property.

GastonFarmersMktFederal law does not mandate a public hearing other than the announcement of the new plan, and the City is taking this extra step to insure that the affected citizens are aware of the newly drawn flood level.

The letter was to make property owners aware that all or part of their property may be located in a floodplain. These new maps will identify the potential for flooding that was previously unknown.
