Mayor Speaks on Baseball in Richmond

Tuesday, September 23, 2008

Mayor L. Douglas Wilder spoke at this week's City Council meeting about the soon to be completed procurement process of two Requests for Proposals (RFPs) that will impact the future of baseball in Richmond.

The Mayor indicated that developers’ plans would be presented to both the Council and the public on October 27.

“Richmond is a baseball town, and though the Richmond Braves chose on their own to leave after more than 40 years, we are bringing baseball back to Richmond.”

The Mayor indicated that three developers are currently being interviewed as part of a Request For Proposals redevelopment plan for the North Boulevard area where The Diamond ballpark is located.

Based on the proposals and the information from the Minor League representatives, the Mayor indicated that there is growing momentum to have a baseball stadium at a location other than the current site.  Such a proposal would create the opportunity for major economic redevelopment in both the North Boulevard and Main Street Station areas.
